The Educational Tourism Project
(the entire net income will be used to support the VSN)

It was the need for a new source of income for the VSN, explained in the previous page, compelled JGVK to start looking for a source of income.

Since our available options are not too many, simultaneously since millions of people from Kolkata visit Sundarban every year for recreation and relaxation spending big amount, it was considered logical to offer the visitors a new kind of experience possibility, like the villagers living conditions in the Sundarban, its implications. This may also generate the visitors a nation building thinking about the status of the societal fundament and the efforts being made by JGVK in this relation.

The Education Project (The key Project of JGVK + IGF)

In 2011, JGVK and IGF-Denmark had conceived an ambitious educational project Vivekananda Sikhsha Niketan, recognized by West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, consisting of:

  • A Primary and A High School Vivekananda Shiksha Niketan (VSN) in Joygopalpur, and
  • 2 Primary Schools, in the villages Amlamethi in Gosaba island and Bermajur in Sandeshkhali.

The objective of the school is to provide quality education to the backward children of the poor farmer families in Sundabans to enable them to be strong citizens of India. The project is funded by Topsoe Company of Denmark. About 200 children each attend the two primary schools in two places and in VSN school is attended by about 800 children, class KG to Class X, from 20 different villages along with 150 dormitory students.

Because of better education, the demand from the surrounding families to enroll their children in VSN school is increasing, simultaneously the donor bodies want JGVK to run the school on sustained basis, for which local funding is necessary.
